The Indian Head Cent , or Indian Head Penny is one of the most desired series of US coins for collectors. The Indian Head Penny was minted from 1859-1909, & replaced the short lived Flying Eagle Cent of 1856-1858. It was designed by James Longacre & is probably one of the most popular of all US coins. All Indian Head Pennies prior to 1908 were minted in the Philidelphia mint. Partway through 1864 the nickel was removed & the alloy changed to 95% copper 5% tin bronze & remained bronze until the coin was discontinued in 1909. These coins were originally red in color.
